Born in East Moline, IL, on August 30, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Elizabeth (Vermeulen) Willard. Sylvia was a daughter of strong stock. She grew up in Henry County, Illinois, and attended grade and high school in Cambridge where she met her eventual husband, Tom.

He went off to the University of Illinois and they soon married and together scraped and scratched their way to his graduation. Upon graduation, they and their three sons moved often the first 10 years with the DuPont Company but Newark was always home base. For the past 22 years, Sylvia and Tom have been snowbirds between Newark, DE, and Port Charlotte, FL. An avid golfer, she and her husband were members of both the Riverwood Golf Club in Port Charlotte and Newark Country Club. Sylvia was a master gardener and quilter and she loved garage sales.

Most importantly, Sylvia was a talented homemaker who devoted her life to her loving family. Sylvia fought a courageous battle against lung cancer beginning 12 years ago and gained unexpected remission at that time. Unfortunately, the cancer returned a year ago. Her family has deep appreciation for the care she received by the staff at Christiana Care of Newark and the Florida Cancer Specialists of Port Charlotte. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Loren Thomas Finnicum; children, Bradley T.
