According to an MRC release on Thursday, Sept. 8, the man is hospitalized at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and has undergone four surgeries in an attempt to save his arm. Vibrio vulnificus is known as a and enters the body tissues through open wounds. It can cause severe skin ulcers, gangrene and deadly blood infections in people who expose cuts to warm saltwater containing the bacteria.

A vibrio infection is a fast-moving infection that can also cause nausea, diarrhea, limb loss or death. Vibrio bacteria occur natu- rally in the Chesapeake Bay, living in a habitat of brackish or salt water. The bacteria are not associated with pollution. According to the Talbot County Health Department, there are between 50 and 100 reported cases of vibrio in Maryland each year. But, vibrio infections can be prevented.

For gastrointestinal infections, important to fully cook shellfish before eating, especially in the summer when temperatures are warmer. For blood infections caused by an open wound, not getting in Bay waters while having an open wound is a start. If that be avoided, washing the wound with water and anti-bacterial soap, or hand sanitizer with alcohol in it, is one way to prevent the infection from spreading. Crime Solvers, supervised by the Kent County Office, offers cash rewards for information leading to an arrest. Call 410-778-4444.
